Foreign Language Interpreter II
Description
The Henderson County Department of Public Health is a public agency that provides public health services to advance its stated mission "to promote, protect, and advance the health and wellness of our community". The Women, Infants and Children's (WIC) division provides food benefits and nutritional counseling to eligible participants through the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program. Pregnant and postpartum women and infants and children, up to age five, are potentially eligible for this program.
To provide WIG services to eligible WIG participants, by accomplishing necessary administrative tasks including assistance with foreign language interpretation services (Spanish, verbal and written) required by WIG program and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Interpreters are instrumental in recognizing the needs of all program participants and are also required to support patients/clients linked to other public health programs including clinical services when needed.
Schedule
Work week schedule typically consists of 37.5 hours per week, carried out Monday through Friday 8:00
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with an hour afforded for lunch. Employees in this position may be required to work longer hours, weekends or holidays as needed to address program and client needs. The position is also obligated to participate in and support any public health preparedness event, need, training, exercise or general emergency as required by the Health Director during traditional work hours and/or other/additional hours on nights, weekends and holidays as deemed necessary.
Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of the social, economic, environmental conditions of clients served.
- Basic knowledge of the community and available resources.
- Interpersonal skills for establishing rapport and relating to the population served and to a variety of service disciplines (physicians, mid-wives, nutritionists, nurses, hospital staff and lactation consultants)
- Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to learn counseling techniques and communication skills.
- Ability to understand and speak Spanish and English (interpreting and translating).
Required Minimum Training and Experience
Graduation from a high school or GED and one year of experience in interpreting and translating English and the required foreign language in a setting that requires a knowledge of the programs and services, preferably in a health care or human services setting. Demonstrates the fluency and skill necessary to meet the needs of the organization and the client populations served.
