Pushcart/Mobile Food Units

Requirements for Food Trucks and Pushcarts

Food trucks and pushcarts must operate safely and cleanly. Most mobile vendors must use a permitted restaurant or commercial kitchen (commissary) as a daily home base.

Minimum Requirements for All Food Trucks

Every mobile unit must have these basics built-in:

  • Storage space for all supplies.
  • Clean, protected water hookups and faucets.
  • Safe trash disposal for solid and liquid waste.
  • Drainage systems to flush out sewage holding tanks.

For detailed guidelines and rules governing these operations, you can consult the North Carolina DHHS Food Protection and Sanitation Rules or review the Mobile Food Unit Commissary Guidance.
