Description

The Henderson County Department of Public Health is currently accepting applications for one full-time Foreign Language Interpreter II (Medical Office Assistant) position. This position provides Spanish interpretation to Spanish-speaking patients and customers of the Department of Public Health in all areas of the clinic and immunization setting. This role is one of three positions that rotate between clinical/medical interpreting and nursing assistance duties requiring significant knowledge of clinical environments, medical terminology, and principles and practices of patient care and techniques. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, checking in patients, obtaining vital signs, height and weight, graphing measurements, performing hearing and vision tests, eliciting chief complaints, performing basic lab procedures, escorting patients to exam room, preparing patients for exams and assisting providers and nurses, cleaning and stocking supplies, sterilizing instruments, and assisting nurses and providers as assigned and as needed.

 

Schedule

Usual work schedule is Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm. Alternate or additional, evening or weekend hours may be required to meet client, clinic or agency needs. All positions of the department are required to work public health emergencies that may be outside normal business hours including weekends, holidays, and extended hours.

 

Qualifications

  • Demonstrates skill or oral and written fluency in English to Spanish and Spanish to English to meet the needs of the agency and client populations served.
  • Knowledge of programmatic terminology and protocol.
  • Some knowledge of the principles and practices of patient care and techniques.
  • Some knowledge of common health and safety precautions in working in local health departments.
  • Ability to work with staff and patients under supervision, as set up by departmental policies.
  • Ability to maintain clerical records and to compile reports from these records.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and empathy in dealing with patients.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions

 

Required Minimum Training and Experience

High School or GED and one year of experience in interpreting and translating English and the required foreign language in a setting that requires a knowledge of the programs or services. Applicant must demonstrate the fluency and skill necessary to meet the needs of the organization and client populations served.

 

Additional Training/Experience:

Prefer: Successful completion of a one-year formal training course in medical office assisting at a community college or technical institute; or one year combination of clerical and medical experience

Salary Grade 66A          Anticipated Hiring Range: $18.81 - $25.00 per hour      Benefit Eligible
