Description

Henderson County Department of Public Health provides medical, nursing and disease control services to patients. Programs include Maternal Health, Family Planning, Well Child Care and Pediatric Primary Care, limited Adult Health services, Behavioral Health, Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Program (BCCCP), HIV/STD Testing, Evaluation, Treatment and Surveillance, Tuberculosis Control, Communicable Disease Surveillance and Control, Immunizations, and Foreign Travel Vaccines.  Services include psycho-social assessment, physical exam, diagnosis and treatment, immunizations, communicable disease investigation, treatment surveillance and reporting, TB patient case management, health education and referral for other services as needed.

This employee works to interrupt transmission of TB through responding quickly to reports of newly infected individuals, identifying contacts, investigating contact exposure, and initiating and monitoring appropriate treatment for active and latent TB. This employee works closely with State Tuberculosis Control Division and complies with statutory, regulatory and reporting requirements. This employee is the primary nurse for the Foreign Travel Clinic that provides vaccinations and medications to patients based on CDC recommendations in consultation with the medical director. This employee also serves as back-up to the Communicable Disease and Immunization Programs. 

Schedule

The regular work schedule will be 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday with shared coverage for the 24/7 Communicable Disease cell phone (including evenings and weekends).  Extended hours (including weekends) and/or alternate hours may also be required during public health emergencies or to meet agency needs.

Qualifications

Considerable knowledge and skill in the application of public health nursing theory, practice, principals and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs; considerable knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles and practices of public health; knowledge of available resources and organizations and the ability to coordinate these as needed; general knowledge of current social and economic problems related to public health, including health disparities; ability to plan, coordinate and oversee work of others as needed, ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions, ability to work in partnership with patients and service providers to elicit needed information and maintain effective working relationships; ability to record services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports and medical instructions, sufficient computer skills to access information, document in patient records and communicate with others.

Required Minimum Training and Experience

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. in Nursing which includes a public health rotation and one year of Public Health Nursing experience; or Master’s in Public Health and graduation from a school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience; or graduation from a school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience including one year of Public Health Nursing experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

All public health nurses employed in a local Health Department will be required to complete the North Carolina Credentialed Public Health Nurse Course within one year of employment as a condition of continued employment in accordance with North Carolain Administrative code 10A NCAC 46 .0301.

Minimum Annual Salary: $70,720.07       Grade: 79A

Hiring salary will be determined based on qualifications and internal equity.
