COVID-19 Vaccines
The Health Department has the Moderna Spikevax Vaccine available. For other COVID-19 vaccine options, visit www.vaccines.gov to find a local pharmacy.
The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services has issued a standing order defining vaccine eligibility. This order stands in place of a prescription from a healthcare provider.
Who can get the COVID-19 vaccine without a prescription or a provider order?
- Adults 65 years and older
- Adults 18 to 64 years old with at least one self-attested condition. These conditions include:
- Asthma
- Cancer
- Cerebrovascular disease
- Chronic kidney disease
- Chronic lung diseases, limited to bronchiectasis, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), interstitial lung disease, pulmonary embolism, and pulmonary hypertension
- Chronic liver diseases, limited to cirrhosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, and autoimmune hepatitis
- Cystic fibrosis
- Diabetes mellitus, type 1 and type 2
- Disabilities, including Down syndrome (complete list included here)
- Epilepsy
- Heart conditions (such as heart failure, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathies)
- Hemophilia
- HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
- Mental health conditions, limited to mood disorders (including depression), and schizophrenia spectrum disorders
- Neurologic conditions, limited to dementia and Parkinson’s Disease
- Overweight (BMI >25 kg/m2 )
- Physical inactivity
- Pregnancy or recent pregnancy
- Primary immunodeficiencies
- Sickle cell disease
- Smoking, current or former
- Solid organ or blood stem cell transplantation
- Substance use disorders
- Tuberculosis
- Use of corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive medications
For children 6 months to 18 years old: The Health Department does have the vaccine in stock. However, we must have an order from the child’s provider for the vaccine and the diagnosis code for their underlying condition that qualifies them to receive the vaccine.
