Community Social Services Assistant
Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary purpose of this position is to provide direct services to older adults and adults with disabilities in their homes and community settings. Services may include light housekeeping tasks, errands, and transportation to medical, dental, and therapeutic appointments. Duties may also include assisting and training older adults and adults with disabilities in the areas of household management, nutrition, community living skills, and safety measures in the home. Many clients served by this position may have complex needs related to mental health, substance use, cognitive functioning, and/or may be hesitant or resistant to accepting services. At times, the Adult Services Community Social Services Assistant may be assigned to work with clients whose needs require a higher level of support, persistence, and engagement.
This position requires patience, sound judgment, strong boundaries, and the ability to build trust with adults who may be experiencing significant barriers to safety, stability, or independence. The employee may occasionally assist individuals and families with locating housing and transportation resources. The employee is also expected to communicate relevant observations and concerns to Adult Services staff and maintain required documentation of services provided. Work is primarily performed in clients’ homes and in community settings.
Qualifications: Basic knowledge of the social, economic and environmental conditions of clients to be served; working knowledge of basic household tasks and management functions and ability to teach others; working knowledge of and ability to enlist the aid of available community resources; skill in basic reading, writing and simple mathematics; ability to establish rapport and relate to population served and a variety of service disciplines (social workers, doctors, dentists, etc.) and community businesses, ability to prepare and maintain simple reports of activities; ability to exercise good judgement in appraising situations; ability to verbally communicate findings.
