HOME Funds

The federally funded HOME Investment Partnership Program provides grants to States and localities that communities use - often in partnership with local nonprofit groups - to fund a wide range of activities that build, buy, and/or rehabilitate affordable housing for rent or homeownership or provide direct rental assistance to low-income people. HOME is the largest Federal block grant to State and local governments designed exclusively to create affordable housing for low-income households.

HOME funds serve a four-county area made up of Henderson, Buncombe, Madison and Transylvania counties. They can be used only to create or preserve affordable housing for low-income persons. The program is managed by the City of Asheville, acting as lead agency under the direction of the Asheville Regional Housing Consortium. The 2006 HUD allocations for the regions was $1.3 million.

Habitat for Humanity was awarded $110,000 for their Shuey Knolls project in the Edneyville community. This project, when completed, will provide affordable homes to 80 families in Henderson County.

Housing Assistance received $400,000 in funding as a Community Housing Development Organization (CHODO). This project will result in the construction of 40 units of rental housing for elderly and disabled households.
