Local Public Health Director

Essential Duties:

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, local, state and federal officials
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in analyzing situations and making decisions Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public health
  • Must be vigilant regarding shifts with community needs and/or sensitive work related tasks Must be flexible and have the ability to manage diverse issues
  • General knowledge of management principles, techniques and practices Ability to direct employees and programs in the various areas of responsibility
  • Accuracy and detail required for work in a number of realms, including budgetary conformance, funding accountability, legal conformance, medical confidentiality, public information, contract compliance and other legal requirements
  • Must be knowledgeable regarding risk management, county/department safety policies/procedures, health and physical hazards for staff and operations, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements, preparedness/bioterrorism threats, infection control, communicable disease and other appropriate initiatives to assure and protect the health and safety of the general public, clients and staff
  • Working knowledge of applicable federal and state laws, rules and regulations

Minimum Requirements:

  • Medical Doctorate
  • Or master’s degree in public health administration and at least one year of employment experience in health programs or health services
  • OR a master’s degree in a public health discipline other than public health administration and at least three years of employment experience in health programs or health services
  • OR a master’s degree in public administration and at least two years experience in health programs or health services
  • Or a master’s degree in a field related to public health and at least three years of experience in health programs or health services
  • Or a bachelor’s degree in public health administration or public administration and at least three years experience in health programs or health services

Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience as a Local Public Health Director
