POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Auxiliary Public Health Nurse I – School Health Nurse Specialist

(Less than 1,000 hours in a 12-month period – not benefit-eligible)

 

Description:  The Henderson County Department of Public Health is accepting applications for one Auxiliary Public Health Nurse I – School Health Nurse Specialist position.  This position will work with school personnel in assigned schools in administering and managing school health services.  This includes assessing the needs of the assigned school-age population, arranging or providing health-related training for school personnel, administering immunizations, and providing critical nurse care as needed. 

The School Health Nurse works primarily in assigned schools and the community and is supervised by the School Health Nurse Supervisor.  Scheduled work hours will vary depending on school and agency needs, but would be between 8:00 A.M. and 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday with a minimum time commitment of two days a week, most weeks. This position is limited to less than 1,000 hours in a 12-month period and is not benefit-eligible.

 

Qualifications: Basic knowledge of, and skill in, the application of nursing theory, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs; understanding of best practices, safety standards, and therapeutic outcomes related to the specific area(s) of practice; working knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health, including health disparities; working knowledge of available resources and organizations; ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions; ability to work in partnership with patients and with other service providers to elicit needed information and to maintain effective working relationships; ability to accurately record services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports and medical instructions; some ability to oversee the work of others; adequate computer skills to allow communication, patient record documentation, accessing information.

Preferred Qualifications: Spanish language skills desirable but not required. At least one year of professional nursing experience preferred.

Required Minimum Training:  Current N.C. Registered Nurse license; Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing.
