Water Conservation

Water conservation is an easy method we can all employ everyday, at our homes, schools, and businesses, to ensure that this critical resource is not wasted.

* Follow these simple tips to make an impact:

Install a dual flush or low flow toilet or put a conversion kit on your existing toilet.

  • Turn off Your Faucet

A lot of us are guilty of running the tap while brushing our teeth. But did you know that turning off the tap until it’s time to rinse can save up to 200 gallons of water each month?

Stopping the flow is the way to go. These include:

  • Shorter hand-washing sessions – If you wash your hands for 20 seconds you can save 6 gallons per day.
  • Energy-efficient dish washer – Turn off the faucet and turn on the dish washer. You waste 5 times more water washing dirty dishes in the sink than you do using an energy efficient machine.
  • Cook smart – Wash fruits and veggies in a pan of water instead of under the tap.

Monitor your water usage on your water bill and ask your local government about a home water audit.

  • Rethink and Re-plan Your Gardening Strategy

Consider installing rainwater tanks, using drought-tolerant plants and applying a generous amount of mulch to keep the moisture in the soil. Also remember to water your plants in the morning or in the evening.

Don’t overwater your lawn or water during peak periods, and install rain sensors on irrigation systems.

Plant a rain garden for catching stormwater runoff from your roof, driveway, and other hard surfaces.

  • Share your knowledge about saving water through conservation and efficiency with your neighbors.
