Public Health Nurse III (Enhanced Role Nurse)

Communicable Disease Unit

Description:

 Henderson County Department of Public Health is accepting applications for one full-time Public Health Nurse III - Communicable Disease Unit. The primary role of a Communicable Disease Nurse is to interrupt transmission of reportable communicable diseases by responding quickly and appropriately to reports of disease exposure and infection, identifying contacts and investigating contact exposure, and initiating appropriate treatment and monitoring. This employee works closely with State Communicable Disease Control Division and complies with statutory, regulatory, and reporting requirements. This position includes direct patient care as an Enhanced Role Nurse in the Sexually Transmitted Infection Clinic. The nurse in this role will independently obtain a patient history, perform physical examinations to determine normal from abnormal, collect appropriate screening tests, and counsel patients on health promotion and prevention of sexually transmitted disease.

Schedule:

The regular work schedule for this position is 8:00 AM- 4:30 PM, Monday-Friday. Alternate or additional hours may be required to meet department, client, emergency shelter or public health response needs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 Thorough knowledge of and skill in the application of nursing theory, practice, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs; for employees in expanded role positions, considerable knowledge of, and skill in obtaining a health history and performing physical examinations sufficient enough to determine if there is any deviation from normal; considerable knowledge of available resources and organizations and the ability to coordinate these as needed; general knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health, including health disparities; ability to plan, coordinate, and oversee the work of others; ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and make decisions; ability to work in partnership with patients and with other service providers to elicit needed information and to maintain effective working relationships; ability to record accurately services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions; considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and practices of public health; adequate computer skills to allow communication, patient record documentation, and accessing of information.

Required Minimum Education and Training for Expanded Role:

 Current N.C. Registered Nurse license. Graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation and two years of Public Health nursing experience; or a Master’s in Public Health and graduation from a school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience; or graduation from a school of professional nursing and three years of professional nursing experience including two years of Public Health nursing experience; AND Completion of approximately three months of training that includes both a didactic and on-the-job supervision phase in the expanded role specialty to which assigned  [Note: three months training can be obtained concurrently with other experience required for position ].

Preferred Qualifications: The following is preferred but not required: previous experience in communicable disease reporting and investigation; Spanish language skills; North Carolina Public Health Enhanced Role Nurse registration.

Salary Grade: 80A

Anticipated Hiring  Range: $61,639-$75,000 annually Benefit Eligible
