Public Health Nurse II – School Health Nurse Specialist

Description

 Henderson County Department of Public Health is accepting applications for one full-time Public Health Nurse II - School Health Nurse Specialist position.  The primary role of a School Health Nurse is to work with school personnel in assigned schools in designing, administering, and managing school health services.  This includes assessing the needs of the assigned school-age population, designing services, developing policies, protocols and procedures, arranging or providing health-related training for school personnel, and evaluating the school health program; administering immunizations, and providing critical nurse care as needed.  This is an advanced and specialized professional level of nursing requiring expertise and experience in school health, public health nursing, use of community resources and program development.  The School Health Nurse works primarily in assigned schools and the community. 

 

Schedule

The schedule is typically 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday.  Alternate or additional hours (evening/weekend) may be required at times to meet agency, school, and/or public health response needs.

 

Qualifications

  Considerable knowledge of, and skill in, the application of nursing theory, practice, principles, and techniques employed in the field of public health and related programs; considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the principles and practices of public health; knowledge of available resources and organizations and the ability to coordinate these as needed; general knowledge of current social and economic problems relating to public health, including health disparities; ability to plan, coordinate, and oversee the work of others; ability to deal tactfully with others and to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions; ability to work in partnership with patients and with other service providers to elicit needed information and to maintain effective working relationships; ability to record accurately services rendered and to interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instructions; adequate computer skills to allow communication, patient record documentation, and accessing of information. 

 

Required Minimum Training and Experience

  Current N.C. Registered Nurse license and graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and one year of professional nursing experience.  Employee must pass the National Certification Examination for School Nurses within three years of employment, which requires a B.S. or higher in Nursing to be able to sit for the exam. Preferred Education: B.S. or higher in Nursing.

  • If a fully qualified PHN II is not available, we will consider hiring a PHN I in a work-against status. PHN I requires graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and a current N.C. Registered Nurse license.

Salary Grade 79A          Anticipated Hiring Range: $59,280-$72,000 annually                                                          Benefit Eligible

(Hiring salary will be determined based on qualifications and internal equity.)
